Project overview.

The largest Vietnamese-owned mall in America needed to improve its security camera system to address shoplifting, nighttime crime, and gang activity in the surrounding area. The mall’s legacy analog camera system had poor visual clarity, especially at night, making it difficult to identify faces, capture license plates, or provide useful evidence to authorities.

PM2NET assessed the mall’s security needs and recommended a modern Axis camera solution using high-resolution dome and pan-tilt-zoom cameras. PM2NET’s in-house Axis Communications Certified Technician completed a walkthrough with experienced installers to determine the best camera type and placement for each area of the mall.

The upgraded system improved image clarity, strengthened crime response capabilities, enabled license plate and facial identification, and helped reduce bandwidth and storage costs through Axis Zipstream technology.

Client Background

The client is the largest Vietnamese-owned mall in America. The mall includes retail stores and offers imported products, food, and drinks.

Because the property is located in an area where theft and crime are recurring concerns, the mall needed a stronger security solution to help capture incidents, deter criminal activity, and provide useful video evidence to law enforcement.

(02)

Challenge.

Poor Camera Resolution

The mall’s previous analog-based camera system had limited visual clarity. During the day, image quality was not strong enough to consistently capture identifying details. At night, the problem became worse.

Facial recognition and license plate capture were nearly impossible with the old system. This created a major security gap, especially in an environment affected by shoplifting and nighttime gang activity.

Without clear video evidence, criminal activity was harder to challenge, report, and prevent. The mall needed a camera system capable of producing reliable, high-resolution footage in critical areas.

Inefficient Data and Power Usage

The legacy analog cameras also created cost and efficiency concerns. Because the cameras ran 24/7, they consumed significant data and power.

This increased overhead for the owner and made the system less cost-effective to operate. The mall needed a solution that could improve image quality while also reducing storage, bandwidth, and operating costs.

(03)

Result.

PM2NET’s engineers determined that the mall needed a more advanced camera system designed for higher resolution, better coverage, and greater efficiency.

PM2NET proposed several high-resolution Axis cameras, selecting specific models based on the requirements of different areas within the mall. The project was guided by PM2NET’s in-house Axis Communications Certified Technician, who performed a site walkthrough with experienced installers.

During the walkthrough, the team reviewed camera locations, coverage needs, lighting conditions, security risks, and the capabilities required for each area. This allowed PM2NET to match the right camera to the right location instead of applying a one-size-fits-all approach.

The solution included:

  • High-resolution Axis dome-style cameras

  • Axis pan-tilt-zoom 4K cameras for areas requiring flexible coverage

  • Camera placement planning based on mall layout and risk areas

  • Improved monitoring for entrances, parking areas, retail zones, and high-risk locations

  • Axis Zipstream technology to reduce bandwidth and storage usage

Technology Implemented

Axis P3225-LVE Mk II Cameras

The Axis P3225-LVE Mk II was used as the main dome-style camera in many areas of the mall. These cameras provided a major improvement over the previous analog system.

With the upgraded image quality, the mall could capture clearer facial details and license plate information. This gave the property owner and security staff better evidence when incidents occurred.

Axis 4K PTZ Cameras

Axis pan-tilt-zoom 4K cameras were installed in areas that required more flexible viewing angles and higher-performance monitoring.

The PTZ functionality allowed cameras to pan, tilt, and zoom as needed, making them ideal for larger open areas, high-traffic zones, and locations where broader surveillance coverage was necessary.

Axis Zipstream Technology

The upgraded camera system also allowed the mall to take advantage of Axis Zipstream technology.

Zipstream helps reduce bandwidth and storage usage by compressing video more intelligently. Instead of constantly sending full data for every part of the image, the system can preserve important moving objects while reducing data for static areas.

For example, when no activity is occurring, the system can avoid wasting unnecessary bandwidth on unchanged visual information. When motion occurs, the system prioritizes the relevant moving objects. This is especially valuable for a mall environment where cameras operate day and night but may experience long periods of low activity.

The Result

The mall significantly improved its security capabilities by replacing the outdated analog camera system with a modern Axis solution.

The upgraded cameras provided much clearer footage, allowing the mall to capture facial details and license plate information that were previously difficult or impossible to identify. This strengthened the mall’s ability to document incidents, support investigations, and report useful evidence to authorities.

The new system also helped reduce unnecessary bandwidth and storage consumption through Zipstream technology. This improved efficiency and helped control costs while maintaining high-quality video where it mattered most.

By working with PM2NET, the mall gained a camera system that was better aligned with its security risks, operating environment, and budget needs.

Key Outcomes

  • Replaced outdated analog security cameras with modern Axis cameras

  • Improved image clarity for security monitoring

  • Enabled better facial identification during incidents

  • Improved license plate capture capabilities

  • Installed dome-style cameras across key mall areas

  • Installed 4K pan-tilt-zoom cameras where flexible coverage was needed

  • Reduced bandwidth and storage usage with Axis Zipstream technology

  • Improved evidence quality for reporting incidents to authorities

  • Increased security coverage in a high-risk retail environment

  • Helped reduce long-term operating overhead
